Tucked on the eastern fringes of the city of Kolkata, at the heart of Salt Lake, a park is built around expansive waterbody known to people as Central Park, also referred to as Banabitan locally, offers more than 90 species of birds including resident and migratory birds. There are also quite a few mammals, frogs and insects inhabiting in this place.

Central Park, Kolkata is the second largest open place after Maidan. There is a bridge which connects to the other side of the lake. The lake serves as haven for waterbirds like Lesser Whistling Duck, Common Moorhen, Egrets, Cormorants, and other species.

Central Park houses such a wide variety of bird activities due to the presence of enormous regional plants and trees. For instance, the Spotted Owlet which is now a resident of this area and lives on a particular tree and also the Oriental Honey Buzzard.

Although you can find birds like Parakeets, Woodpeckers, Kites almost throughout the year but the best time for bird watching is from October to January due to the fact that many migratory birds like Taiga Flycatcher, Shikra visit Central Park, Kolkata during the winter months.

Apart from the birds, there is also an enthralling “Butterfly Garden” possessing several species of butterflies. The Butterfly Garden consists of plots where shrubs and trees have been planted on which the butterflies and their larvae feed upon.A group of dedicated gardeners maintain the area under the aegis of the West Bengal Forest Department.

The park opens at 9:30 AM in the morning and closes at 5:30 PM in the evening. There is also an entry fee of Rs.30/person and Rs.30 per camera.

Though one can stay for the entire day for bird watching but the ideal time to visit Central Park is from 6:30AM – 9:30 AM.In that case one does not need to pay the entry fees as the park officially opens at 9:30 in the morning. Before that people tend to go the park for morning walks and to enjoy the serenity of nature.
