Lineated Barbet (Megalaima lineata)
The Lineated Barbet can be found along the southern foothills of the Himalayas and also in parts of Bangladesh and West Bengal. In the local language of Bengal it is known as “Sobuj Bosonto Bauri”.
Where could you spot the Lineated Barbet in Kolkata?
The Lineated Barbet is a migratory bird; hence it can only be seen in the winter months i.e., from September to January. To name a few places such as Central Park, Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary, and Shyamkhola houses the winter visitor in Kolkata.
When should you photograph the Lineated Barbet?
Early morning is preferably the best time to get a glimpse of the Lineated Barbet bird. In spite of having a green body, it is quite easy to spot them, even if they are sitting on a tree due to its pale brownish head with streaks. Since the bird isn’t very shy in nature, they tend to be approachable. If you are a bird photographer or willing to become one such, patience is the key element. So, little amount of patience will help you fetch quality pictures of the bird. Another way to locate the bird is through their distinctive calls.
Photographing the bird, characteristics, breeding and the necessary details:
The Lineated Barbet is a large Barbet of 28 cm in size. It is larger than the other Barbets. The most visible colour of the bird is green. It has a pale brownish head with streaks due to which it is often confused with the Brown-headed Barbet. In fact, it possesses less extensive circumobital skin than Brown-headed Barbet, which usually keeps them separated from their bill. Both the sexes are identical. Yet there are two species of which one is with a paler morph and the one with a darker morph. The adult birds have pale brownish white streaking on head and breast and uniform unspotted wing coverts.
They are mostly found in open Sal forest.Primarily, they feed on fruits. They nest in tree holes and usually lay 2 to 4 eggs, which are incubated for 13 to 15 days.
Lineated Barbet call: highly monotonous kotur kotur kotur uttered throughout the day.
I photographed the bird at Central Park, Kolkata.Though they are not widely spread in this area but they can be often spotted here. The other two Barbets that can be spotted in this park are – Coppersmith Barbet and Blue-throated Barbet. In spite of being slightly shy compared to other Barbets, they are not very difficult to locate and approach. Other two Barbets are the Coppersmith Barbet and Blue Throated Barbet.
- easy to spot and approach, though slightly shy than other barbets.
- a min of 300mm prime is suggested to get closeups.
